The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: Portrait of Isaac ("Ike") H. Sawhill from "Historical and Biographical Souvenir of the Ohio School for the Deaf," published in Columbus, Ohio, in 1898. In addition to a history of the school's operation, the book includes "portraits and biographical sketches of representative alumni" such as Sawhill. His biographical sketch states that Sawhill was born in Pennsylvania, and first moved to Columbus to attend the Ohio School for the Deaf in 1872. He graduated as valedictorian, and was also an active athlete, playing catcher for the school's baseball club the Independents. Sawhill went on to work in hog farming and later dry goods after a brief professional baseball career. At the time this volume was written, Sawhill lived in Seville, Ohio, and was "known as one of the best amateur cyclists of Northern Ohio, having held the county championship for the past two years." His wife, Sadie, is also noted as a skilled cyclist. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a bicycle race taken in Marietta, Ohio, 1893, most likely at the Washington County Fairgrounds. The winner of the race is identified as Walter Bell, who is seen second from the inside at the starting line. According to U.S. Census records, this is likely Walter D. Bell who was born in 1875 to William and Mary Bell of Marietta, and married Carrie C. Bell. He appears regularly in issues of the Marietta Daily Leader as an avid cyclist, involved with the Carroll Cycling Club and placing in many regional races. He was a woodworker at the Mountain State Manufacturing Company, based in Williamstown, West Virginia, just across the Ohio River from Marietta. He died in 1959, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta. View on Ohio Memory.
